The Vergara decision was overturned today, which was not unexpected. Virtually every legal expert said it would be. Here is a letter I wrote to the LA School Report, the biased blog of the corporate reformers.
Dear LA School Report,
I can honestly say as a public school teacher this decision is cold comfort after seeing John Deasy run some very good National Board Certified teachers out of the district and seeing other veteran teachers pushed out. It’s cold comfort because I know teachers were forced up on the witness stand by 12 year- olds in this case like it was the Cultural Revolution or the Salem Witch Trials.
I’ll carry on with a bit of the weight lifted but not all of it- for I’ll remember how close America came to fascism during the Bush years, I’ll remember how public school teachers and other intellectuals were attacked. I’ll remember that there are 500,000 fewer public school teachers in the USA since the War on Teachers began. I’ll be thankful that at the school I teach at I don’t have to adhere to a pacing plan and I can read virtually any book with my students- no book censorship here, no pressure from other teachers to all be reading the same books in all classes. I’ll realize that I am really just lucky. Had I worked in some other school, I could have lost my profession just like some wonderful colleagues did.
I’ll support my union like never before and teach until I am 80- because now I can. I’ll fight every phony reform and group like Students Matter that comes down the pike.
