BELOW IS A GREAT COMMENT FROM THE DAILY KOS BLOG IN RESPONSE TO A DIARY ABOUT EDUCATION:

“We expect teachers to save the world. We expect them to make futures for needy kids, and kids in poverty, and kids whose lives at home are in a constant state of crises because of addictive, or neglectful or abusive parents.

Its your job to fix this, teach. You’ll fix this, and you’ll do it for crap pay, and pundits and politicians will blame you when it doesn’t work, and we still have poverty and hunger and homelessness. We will blame you for not teaching our kids to think critically. We will blame you for teaching them about things we don’t want them to know about, like evolution, or sexuality, or slavery, or the genocide of the Native Americans, or global warming.
We’ll blame you for giving them novels to read that have profanity in them. We’ll blame you when they lose interest in reading for pleasure. We’ll tell you to grind them down hard with work, and pile more work on them at home. Then we’ll blame you when they burn out and lose all motivation and enthusiam.

In fact, we’ll blame you (and television) for every rotten thing in our society. Even though we don’t even drive through the neighborhood you teach in.

Your job is to fix all of this, so the rest of us can look the other way and pretend that everything will be just fine, so long as every kid gets a good score on a standardized test.”
