The Tipping Point?

Unions: the last best hope

I’m usually a glass half empty kind of person,  but there seem to be a few glimmers of hope on the horizon, like for example, the Compton School Board seeing through the so called Parent “Revolution” and rejecting the use of the parent trigger at McKinley Elementary, a  school I subbed at a few times before getting my teaching credential- not a bad school and certainly not one that would warrant a takeover by a charter.

COMPTON SCHOOL BOARD REJECTS PARENT TRIGGER

TAFT HIGH PARENTS OBJECT TO CHARTER CO-LOCATING IN 18 CLASSROOMS

The last vestiges of involved, middle class parents in LAUSD are raising hell over the handing over of 18 classrooms in Taft High to Ivy Academia, a shady charter organization.  There’s this great quote from the LA Times about Ivy Academia:

“Last year the co-founders of the school — Russian immigrants Eugene Selivanov and his wife, Tatyana Berkovich — were charged with stealing more than $200,000 in public funds through embezzlement, money laundering and filing false tax returns. The pair have denied wrong-doing and are no longer affiliated with Ivy Academia.”

And with the staff of El Camino voting to become an affiliated charter out of frustration with the district’s threatened non-support last year of their very successful Academic Decathlon program,  the flight of middle class support from Los Angeles public schools is just about complete.  The push back from Taft parents is a warning to the district that they lose involved parents at their peril.  But I guess the parents didn’t get the memo-  the district doesn’t want involved parents showing up at School Board meetings balking at the giveaway of their public schools.  They prefer poor parents who don’t have time to get involved.

It appears as if the tables have been turned on Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, who won’t take calls from his own Democratic legislators or union leaders, but apparently will from billionaires who apparently have so little, they want to destroy the collective bargaining rights and pensions of teachers and other public workers. Only the billionaire Mr. Koch was a prank- but it caused Walker to be revealed for the slime ball he is which could tip things back in favor of the unions as Mr. Walker’s credibility takes a big hit.

BLOGGER POSES AS BILLIONAIRE DAVID  KOCH IN PRANK CALL  TO GOVERNOR SCOTT WALKER

It couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy.  The pressure is on Walker as his shady dealings are exposed.  Here is a wonderful analysis of the situation in Wisconsin as it stands now:

WALKER WON’T BACK DOWN….UNLESS THE PRESSURE STAYS ON

From Tunisia to Egypt to Libya to the Rust Belt to the Midwest, working people are rising up.  Living to “fight another day” is no longer an option.  Our day of reckoning is at hand.
