A House Divided: Vote Fletcher, Valencia, Rapkin and Guthrie in the Run Off

February 17, 2011

That sums up the UTLA election results, with every major office headed for a run off except  secondary vice – president won by Greg Solkovits who was reelected, barely avoiding a run off.   This should send a message loud and clear to the corporatized, fossilized  UTLA  leadership who have sold teachers out at every turn and failed to articulate a vision for education.

UTLA President:   VOTE WARREN FLETCHER IN THE RUN OFF

Julie Washington ( R ) 2769 44.76%
Warren Fletcher ( R ) 2305  37.26%

PLEASE VOTE FOR WARREN FLETCHER IN THE RUN OFF – He will hire a professional negotiator so we can negotiate from a position of strength

Mat received about 8% of the vote,  and given the ballot and flyer issues that might not be surprising.  many UTLA members did not receive flyers and they did not receive ballots  until it was too late to turn them in.

NEA Vice President- VOTE ANA VALENCIA IN THE RUN OFF

M. J. (Mary Jan) Roberts ( R ) 1680   41.90%
Ana Valencia ( R )                         1527    38.08%

AFT Vice PresidentVOTE LINDA GUTHRIE IN THE RUNOFF

Linda Guthrie ( R )             531     33.33%
Betty Forrester ( R )         661     41.49%

Secretary- VOTE DAVID RAPKIN IN THE RUNOFF

David Lyell ( R )       1395     25.10%
David Rapkin ( R )  1631     29.35%

I have mixed feelings about the treasurer position so am undecided.

But we have a historic opportunity as teachers to have our voices heard. And the message should go out in the run offs loud and clear: We will no longer tolerate those who sell out teachers to further their own careers.

No one who was part of the power structure at UTLA that abandoned Fremont, Jordan , HPHS and now Belmont High teachers should be reelected.
